Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy: Causes, Symptoms, and Management
Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects the peripheral nerves, which are responsible for transmitting information between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body. When these nerves are damaged, communication is disrupted, leading to a range of symptoms that can affect movement, sensation, and overall quality of life. Although it can affect anyone, certain factors like diabetes, infections, trauma, and genetic disorders increase the risk of developing this condition.
One of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes. Chronically high blood sugar levels can damage nerves over time, especially in the hands and feet. Other factors such as vitamin deficiencies, particularly B vitamins, alcohol abuse, autoimmune diseases, and exposure to toxins or certain medications can also contribute to nerve damage. In some cases, the cause remains unknown, referred to as idiopathic neuropathy.
